What actually
happened?

Nearly 1/3 of all websites worldwide
faced disruptions or problems on 21st
June 2022 at around 6: 27 UTC time.
Apparently, an internet
security firm tried installing
a patch update.

The reason?
exposes just how fragile the privatized,
modern internet infrastructure really is.

Consequences

The prominent CDN for many businesses, Cloudflare brought down many websites worldwide, leaving many unreachable to the public. Among them were Discord, Canva, Streamyard, Shopify, Twitter, AWS Services, and even Google Services.

Causes

"Today ... Cloudflare suffered an outage that affected traffic in 19 of our data centers. Unfortunately, these 19 locations handle a significant proportion of our global traffic. This outage was caused by a change that was part of a long-running project to increase resilience in our busiest locations," Cloudflare said in a blog post. Cloudflare also clarified that this was an error and not the “result of an attack or malicious activity."

Handling of Crisis

The online security company was quick to identify the problem and rectify the issue, getting these services back up and running, but it was a chaotic few minutes there. According to Cloudflare's incident report, the issue was reported at approximately 6:34 a.m. UTC, the problem was identified just over 20 minutes later around 6:57 a.m., and the fix was implemented at around 7:20 a.m.
